Saturday, June 17, 2006 - 07:06:01 Permalink | On this day in 2002 I was frustrated with trying to find a parking lot in Toronto. So I created torontoparking.ca. Its just a proof of concept right now. As time permits i'm going to add new features and some details about each lot (how big, costs, etc..). Who's got the keys to my condo? Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 09:06:12 Permalink | On this day in 2004 | On this day in 2003 I guess you can consider today the "official" day I become a citizen of Toronto... although I wont be moving into my new place until sometime next week. I am picking up the keys to my unit today during lunch. Even though I haven't moved downtown yet, I already have a gripe: The TTC. With a city of over two million people, you'd think the TTC would be the most advanced public transit system in Canada. I don't think pigs are going to fly any time soon. One of the biggest problems I've found (and if rectified could boost ridership in my opinion) is a lack of a trip planner. A trip planner lets you specify your origin and destination points in the city and it will return which busses/subways you need to take at what times. Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Calgary all have trip planners and none of those cities contain more people or as large of a public transit system as Toronto. What the fuck TTC, get your act in gear! Right now the best they can do is provide a huge 9MB PDF of a map of Toronto with hard to read route information overlayed over a map of Toronto's roads. This frustration all stemmed from the fact that i'm trying to find out how Melissa can get home from work on her overnight shift (especially on Sundays). If anyone knows how I can find out if its possible to get from Mount Sinai Hospital to King/Shaw at 7am on a Sunday using the TTC, please let me know. The best I could find was that the "blue night routes" stop service at 5am, then regular weekend service starts up again at 9am on Sundays. Holy Crap! Decoding Edmonton Addresses Saturday, June 3, 2006 - 17:06:59 Permalink | On this day in 2003 | On this day in 2002 Edmonton has an interesting way of addressing their buildings. Lets take, for example, the following fictional address: 10805 101 Street. The first three numbers (108) is the closest intersecting avenue (108 Ave.) the other two numbers (05) is the actual house/building number. This way you know that you will have to go to 101 St. and 108 Ave. in order to find the building what you are looking for. There really isn't 10,805 addresses on 101 Street. Home tomorrow... In other news, cbc.ca's new site design has been launched. I suggest you give them any feedback (especially if it's negative) to their feedback form. |
